    BUSINESS PURPOSE

The purpose of this activity is to prepare the application physical files in a form suitable for inclusion in programming.

    OVERVIEW

Preparation of the physical files began with the identification of the "application logical" files in Phase 2. Following this, a Data Base Engineering Methodology (DBEM) related project should have been initiated to incorporate the files into the corporate data base. During Phases 3 and 4-II peripheral physical files were identified to record input transactions, output data, manual files, and working files between programs. In turn, the Data Resource Management organization is to implement the physical files accordingly and provide file layouts suitable for use in programming. Phase 4-II, Activity C, therefore is the point in the methodology where Data Base Administration provides copybooks, data description language, etc. to Software Engineering for inclusion in the programs.

Although this work is primarily performed by Data Base Administration, Software Engineering provides assistance. In the absence of a Data Resource Management organization, Software Engineering performs the whole activity.

As a result of this activity, the DBA provides Software Engineering with File Layouts and suitable file structures for use with software.

    STEPS IN EXECUTION

    1. Data Base Administration completes the "application physical" File Definitions (FD) in the IRM.

    2. Data Base Administration provides Software Engineering with pertinent File Layouts.

    3. Data Base Administration creates file structures suitable for use in software and makes it available to Software Engineering.

For additional information on this activity, see DBEM/Phase 5 - Application Physical Data Base Design.
