PALM HARBOR (MARCH 17, 2008) - In March, the Palm Harbor Kiwanis Club assisted the fund-raising efforts in two local elementary schools by grilling and purveying hot dogs, bratwursts, pizza, and soft drinks. As in all of our famous pancake and hot dog fund-raisers, we purchased, cooked, and served all of the menu items, and cleaned-up afterwards. The representatives of the school groups promoted the event, sold the tickets and kept ALL of the proceeds for educational purposes. On March 1, from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M., we participated in the "Sutherland Family Fun Fest" at Sutherland Elementary School. This was an outstanding fund-raiser, with many children’s activities and food vendors drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd. Overall, approximately $6,000 was raised for the school. This outstanding program was a tribute to the efforts and skills of Amy Kazinsky, overall chair for this program. The hard-working Palm Harbor Kiwanis members who worked this event were Nate Middleton, Bob Book, John Kiker, John Burnham, Carl Heifetz, Jack Keiler, Royal Eckstein, Duane Young, Gordon Lovett, and John Papuga. Many customers praised the quality of the brats, and kept us quite busy the entire time with repeat orders. On March 14, undaunted by the torrential rains, members of the school community flocked to Palm Harbor Elementary School for their "Family Fun Night" from 5 to 8 P.M. Thanks to the efforts of Denis Beers, this activity went off without a hitch, and was well-received by parents and teachers alike. The children demonstrated their prowess with a martial arts exhibition and instrumental music. Several food vendors were on hand, but the Palm Harbor Kiwanis sale of hot dogs, brats, pizza, and soft drinks was the most popular. Participating Palm Harbor Kiwanis members were Jack Keiler, Bob Book, John Burnham, Carl Heifetz, John Papuga, John Kiker, Bud Stein, Chuck Winscott, Marty Bretthauer, and Royal Eckstein.

PALM HARBOR (FEBRUARY 12, 2008) - The Palm Harbor Library is proud to announce that Arlene Zimmermann has been named this year's "Volunteer of the Year." Arlene will be recognized at a May 2 breakfast honoring the library's 160+ volunteers during National Volunteer Appreciation Week. Arlene lived in New Jersey all her life and spent twenty years in the banking industry. In her last position, she served as Coordinator of the Upper Deerfield Senior Center. Married to Philip for 43 years, Arlene and her husband moved to Palm Harbor in 2002 when he retired. Because of her love of reading, she joined the library right away. There she learned about the Literacy Program and soon became a tutor. Then, in 2003, she volunteered to take over for the co-directors who were retiring. As director, she coordinates the activities of 109 current tutors and 115 students. She handles all activities including recruiting tutors, applying for grants, overseeing finances and publishing a newsletter. The Council trains new tutors several times during the year and always has a waiting list of students. "When Phil and his family came to the United States from Romania in 1949, they spoke only German, and there weren't any programs like this. He and the other children learned English in school, but his parents had to work hard on their own and learned by reading comic books," said Arlene. Arlene was recently named to serve on both the Palm Harbor Community Services Agency (which has fiduciary responsibility for the Palm Harbor and East Lake Libraries and for Palm Harbor Parks & Recreation) and the Library Advisory Council (which assists the director with library policy decisions). A member of the Lutheran Church of the Palms, she served as the church council secretary for four years. She has also been a member of her condo association board (Highland Lakes Villas on the Green I) for 5 years and treasurer for 4 years. A breast cancer survivor of three years, she has a daughter Stacey and an 8-year-old grandson. For more information, contact the library at 727/784-3332.
